El rapero Guru, antiguo miembro del dúo Gang Starr, ha muerto a los 43 años, víctima de un cáncer. El artista había sido ingresado el pasado 18 de febrero, después de sufrir un paro cardiaco. Desde entonces, Guru permanecía en coma.
El artista, natural de Boston, fue uno de los protagonistas del renacer del hip hop en la Costa Este de Estados Unidos y tendió puentes entre el rap y el jazz a través de la serie de discos 'Jazzmatazz', que dio a conocer a artistas como Winston Marsalis entre el público del hip hop.
Según ha revelado la página web, Allhiphop, el rapero ha dejado una carta en la que se despide de sus fans y expresa sus últimas voluntades: "Yo, Guru, escribo estas líneas para mis fans, amigos y seres queridos por todo el mundo. He tenido una larga batalla con el cáncer y he sucumbido a la enfermedad. He sufrido la enfermedad durante un año y he agotado todas las opciones médicas".
En la misiva, Guru expresa su deseo de que el productor Solar, con quien trabajó durante los últimos años, se haga cargo de todos los proyectos que llevó en vida, incluida la serie Jazzmatazz. Además, prohíbe a su ex compañero en Gang Starr, DJ Premier, que utilice el nombre del grupo para cualquier tipo de homenaje o actividad comercial.
"No he tenido ninguna relación con él en los últimos siete años y no quiero tenerla ahora en mi muerte", explica Guru en la carta respecto a su antiguo 'disc-jockey'. Por su parte, DJ Premier ha colgado en su twitter un mensaje de despedida: "El hombre ha encontrado su paz muy lejos del diablo. Descanse en paz Guru/Gang Starr".
