THE BAND
Grupo canadiense, formado a principios de los años 60, en sus comienzos usaron el nombre de «The hawks», ya que fueron el grupo de acompañamiento del rockero Ronnie Hawkins, conocido como «the hawk» (el halcón).
Sus miembros eran: Robbie Robertson (1942) guitarrista Levon Helm (1941) bateria y voz Rick Danko (1942-1999) bajo y voz Richard Manuel (1943-1986) Teclados y voz Garth Hudson (1940) multinstrumentista
Empezaron a hacerse un nombre tras la electrificación de Bob Dylan, que los contrató como banda de acompañamiento para las giras de sus discos «Bring it all back home» y «blonde on blonde» a mediados de los 60.
Su primer album, «Music from the big pink» (1968) causó sensación en la comunidad musical, suponía una vuelta a las raices de la música americana pero desde una óptica muy vanguardista.
En este disco estaba el que ha sido probablemente su mayor éxito: «the weight».
La película «the last waltz» (el ultimo vals, rodada por Martin Scorsese, trata de su retirada de los escenarios, para la cual hacen un concierto con numerosos amigos (Van Morrison, Neil young, Eric clapton ,etc)y hablan de su historia como banda.
Está considerada una de las mejores de la historia del rock. Robbie Robertson nunca volvería a tocar con The Band, pero si el resto, que se volvería a reunir en los años 80, sacando discos de forma esporádica.

The Last Waltz was a concert by the rock group The Band, held on American Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The Last Waltz was advertised as the end of The Band's illustrious touring career, and the concert saw The Band joined by more than a dozen special guests, including Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood, Bobby Charles and Neil Young.
